Sore throat clinics in Rotorua, Taupō and Tūrangi provide fast and accessible sore throat checks and treatment for at-risk children. A sore throat can cause rheumatic fever, which is a serious and preventable illness that can lead to permanent heart damage.

Services we provide

Every time your child has a sore throat you should take them to your healthcare provider or sore throat clinic straight away.

At our sore throat clinics, we can check your child's throat on the same day you contact us and provide free treatment with antibiotics if they are needed. 

This service is available for:

  • Māori and Pacific tamariki and rangatahi aged 4 to 19 years
  • tamariki and rangatahi aged 14 to 19 living in areas of high deprivation 
  • household contacts aged 3 to 35 (with a sore throat) of someone who has been treated for a strep throat infection.

Current drop-in services

  • all secondary school health services across Rotorua, Taupō and surrounding areas within Lakes district
  • Youth One Stop Shops in Taupō and Rotorua
  • Lakes PrimeCare, Rotorua
  • Rotorua and Taupō emergency departments (for urgent cases when the services are unavailable).

All under 13s are free at all services. Some services are free for rangatahi up to age 18.
