Chemotherapy and Medical Day Stay
What is chemotherapy?
Chemotherapy or "chemo" uses drugs to kill cancer cells while doing the least possible damage to normal cells.
Depending on the type of cancer you have, chemotherapy may be the only treatment you need.
The Rotorua Trust Chemotherapy Day Unit operates locally as well as an outreach clinic of Te Whatu Ora Waikato.
Patients are seen both by the Lakes medical oncology team as well as oncologists and haematologists in the Outpatients' Department.
What we do
Treatment is available Monday to Friday from 8am to 4.30pm at Rotorua Hospital and once a week at Taupō Hospital. Not every Taupō patient can be treated in Taupō.
The Rotorua Hospital Chemotherapy and Medical Day Stay Unit is a nine chair, three bed unit.
This is where staff administer a variety of infusions specific to the patient’s conditions.
Chemotherapy is one of the treatments.
Other treatments provided according to a patient's needs include immunotherapy, blood transfusions and bisphosphonate infusions.
