Upcoming strike action by MITs at Lakes DHB hospitals - (Archived)
Wednesday 25 September 2019 - MITs strikes at Lakes DHB hospitals

Impact of 24-hour strike action by MITs at Lakes DHB hospitals

• Rotorua Hospital
• Taupo Hospital

The third and fourth 24-hour strikes by Medical Imaging Technologists who are members of the APEX union are finished. The strike action was from 7am, Monday 14 October, and then the next day from 7am on Wednesday 16 October 2019.

The union covers staff who provide general x-ray imaging, including portable and theatre imaging, CT, MRI and Fluoroscopy.

Lakes normally has approximately 20 MITs working each day across the two hospitals.

Nearly all MITs are union members so most are expected to be on strike.

Contingency planning is well advanced.

The strike action will have the following effects:

•    Health services that require medical imaging will be significantly reduced during the 24 hour strikes.

•    There will be no planned radiology services including MRI services during the action.

•    Imaging will not be available for outpatient clinics or elective surgery.

•    Very limited plain film and CT imaging services will be available but will only be available for very acutely unwell patients.

If you are unwell over the weekend before a planned strike and think you may need an x-ray or scan to help pinpoint the cause, PLEASE get help immediately instead of thinking you can go to hospital on Monday.

Expect delays in the emergency departments on strike days.

People should make their GP their first port of call for minor health issues.

People can also contact Healthline 0800 611 116 for advice and information from a trusted registered nurse, 24/7.
