Lakes DHB contingency planners are making preparations for two strikes by nurses and midwives on the same day, planned for Thursday 19 August.

The nurses’ union NZNO, which includes nurses and midwives, issued its strike notice to Lakes DHB that its members will strike for eight hours between 11am and 7pm, and the midwives’ union MERAS – Midwifery Employee Representation and Advisory Service, issued strike notice to Lakes DHB for a 12 hour strike from 8am to 8pm.

Lakes DHB employs 44 midwives and 765 nurses, many of whom are union members.

All elective surgeries for that day have been deferred and rescheduled. Anyone who will be affected by alterations to planned hospital care is being contacted.

Chief Executive Nick Saville-Wood says the DHB will be able to maintain only minimal services during the strike.

He says patient safety is the number one consideration in planning for the upcoming industrial action.
