Fundraising Walk For Orthopaedic Patients
8/03/2021 2:18:15 p.m.

Patients who have undergone hip or knee replacement surgery are being invited to take part in a special sponsored walk.

Walk For Wishbone, on Saturday, 17 April, is a 1.5km loop walk around Rotorua Hospital to celebrate the new lease on life that this surgery can give.

Registration for the walk is free but participants are encouraged to seek sponsorship to raise money for the National Orthopaedic Research Fund to help fund research projects.

While the walk is held within other DHBs across New Zealand, the walk has not been held in Rotorua since 2014. Registration is from 9.30am with the walk starting at 10am.

Lakes DHB Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Arpad Konyves says more than 200 patients are operated on annually in the city and it majorly improves quality of life.

“Total hip replacements are the second most successful operation improving patients’ quality of life, the first one being cataract surgery,” Mr Konyves says.

“Often it allows a patient pain-free movement and, essentially, hips function as normal. A knee replacement is also a very successful operation in terms of pain relief, although patients are often aware of it.

“Usually we advise patients that they would be able to walk around a golf course or even play doubles tennis after a hip or knee replacement.

“This 1.5km walk, even though there is a slight slope involved, is certainly easily doable by most patients.”

The walk starts from the helicopter pad and follows the path to the west of the hospital down onto Lake Rd. It winds its way back up the path at the lake end of Lake Rd and back to the start.

“I’m looking forward to seeing my patients outside the hospital for an event celebrating their improved function and quality of life. Raising money for research will also make the department proud.”

Registration is free and there will be light refreshments and spot prizes after the walk. Letters have been sent to patients from the last two years, however this is open to anyone who has received a hip or knee replacement.

Participants can bring sponsorship money on the day, post a cheque, or provide your credit card details on your entry form and send to:
