Impact of on-going strike action by RMOs at Lakes DHB hospitals

• Rotorua Hospital
• Taupo Hospital

Resident medical officers (junior doctors) who are members of the NZ Resident Doctors’ Association are striking for five days from 8.00am Monday 29 April until 8.00am on Saturday 4 May 2019. Lakes DHB employs some 93 junior doctors, with most of them members of the RDA.

Contingency planning is underway.

Most scheduled surgery and many outpatient clinics are being cancelled for the strike days and in some cases OUTSIDE of the strike days. Affected patients have been contacted and are being rescheduled.

Any patients who are concerned or want to check their appointment can ring 0800 223 647.

Members of the public may have their healthcare plans affected by ongoing industrial action, including OUTSIDE of the actual strike days.

Changes to hospital services have been made to allow clinical staff to focus on those in most need and to ensure the safety of our patients.

Our planning is for the continuing provision of essential emergency services — acute surgery, ED care, ICU care and maternity care.

Our emergency departments are open for emergencies.

Our staff are doing all they can to meet your healthcare needs

Lakes DHB very much regrets any inconvenience to patients.

Be prepared
People should plan to make sure they are up to date with their prescriptions and other requirements, and if they get into difficulty, they should make their GP their first port of call.
People can also contact Healthline 0800 611 116 for advice and information from a trusted registered nurse, 24/7.

DHBs are continuing to talk to the union to try and settle these negotiations and prevent industrial action.

Members of the NZ Resident Doctors’ Association went on strike for 48 hours in mid and late January, in mid-February and then late February. The union called off a strike planned for mid-April because of a technical hitch.
