Transportation

The best way to get around Rotorua and the surrounding area is by car.

We drive on the left-hand side of the road and are required by law to wear seatbelts.  The Land Transport Safety Authority  website is full of informaiton about the safety requirements for road users. Under the heading Road Code click on Factsheets for information on such things as Buying and Selling, Road User Safety, Driver Safety.

Leasing/Renting
The cost may vary considerably depending on model and length of time leasing the vehicle.  Nations-wide dealers include:  Hertz, Avis, Budget and Thrifty although Lakes District Health Board has a preferred supplier arrangement with Rent-a-Dent. You must be at least 21 years old to rent a car with an International Drivers license obtainable in your home country.

Buying
There are many new and used auto dealers in the Rotorua area.  Pelase check Yellow Pages for a comprehensive list.

All vehicles must be registered and hold a current warrant of fitness. If you have an overseas driver license or an international driving permit, you can drive in New Zealand for a maximum of one year from you first arrival.  You’ll only be able to drive those types of vehicles you were licensed to drive in the country you have come from.  Information on process and fees are available from the Land Transport Safety Authority
