Inland Revenue (Tax)

Income in New Zealand is subject to a combined income and social security tax, which is deducted by your employer on a Pay As You Earn basis (PAYE).  There are relatively few tax deductions and exemptions.

Before commencing employment you are required to register with the Inland Revenue Department and you will be issued with an IRD number.  We can provide you with the appropriate form, however it is preferable that you apply for an IRD number before coming to New Zealand.

Goods and Services Tax (GST)
All goods and services are subject to a 12.5% Goods and Service Tax (GST) and this is included in the displayed price.  Temporary residents cannot claim this tax back; however, if a major purchase is exported directly to an address outside of New Zealand, the GST will not be charged.

The tax year ends at 31 March of each year.
