About Maternity Services at Rotorua and Taupo Hospitals

The Rotorua Hospital Birthing Unit provides secondary inpatient service for women during labour and delivery. There are eight large birthing rooms, four of which have pools.

The Perinatal Inpatient Unit comprises 10 single rooms plus four Mothercraft rooms available to women who may have a baby in SCBU or need extra assistance to establish breastfeeding. Father of the baby are able to stay on the ward, to assist the mother overnight with care for the baby. Own linen /sleeping bag to be brought to the unit for the father.

The Taupo Maternity Unit includes a primary birthing facility for those with low-risk pregnancies. Women with complications will be transfered to birth at Rotorua.

For any identified issues with breastfeeding women are supported by a Lactation Consultant. The Maternity Unit is accredited with Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative status. All midwives are expertly skilled to assist with breastfeeding.

Visiting hours are 11am - 1.30pm and 4pm - 8pm.

Smokefree support is available through a Clinical Smokefree Midwife educator.
