Profiles of Lakes DHB CANDIDATES

Jean BATT
Independent

My principal place of residence is in the Lakes District Health Board area.
As ADoN –Maori Health, Primary and Community role to be of paramount importance in effecting the implementation of a high level of professional leadership and problem solving which in turn encourages and supports the concept of Continuous Quality Improvement and nursing’s professional image within the context of LDHB.
Nursing, I believe, is a profession and currently, through education, social, political and economic advances, that has the power to make decisions for the good of nurses, the nursing body and the public. This is achieved by maintaining a clear vision, embedding these principles within the core strategies and business plans for LDHB.
I have worked for Lakes DHB for 23 years. I believe innovative ideas can only be achieved with the best possible utilisation of resources—human, physical and financial, and the continued success and viability of the organisation depends on an intelligent, creative and progressive approach to Health Care.

Conflict of Interest Statement
I have the following current conflicts of interest with the Lakes District Health Board (DHB):-
I am currently employed by Lakes District Health Board as an Associate Director of Nursing. I am on the Board of Trustees for Karldon Trust and the Executive Board for Te Kaunihera o Nga Neehi Maori National (Maori Council Maori Nurses).

Merepeka RAUKAWA-TAIT

My principal place of residence is in the Lakes District Health Board area.
I am also standing for Rotorua Lakes Council.
As a LDHB member I think we need to get better at measuring what really matters. At Lakes we do have
integrated health systems and vibrant primary care services with everyone working collaboratively. So why do we have some of the worst health statistics in the country? I think it’s because we are too narrow when we think of health. We should be thinking wellness. All the things that impact on our lives, including suitable living standards with housing that matches need; good physical and mental health; education, skills and knowledge for employment.
Community inclusiveness and participation, important even as we age. And respectful, loving family relationships are a big factor too. Measuring these areas changes the focus from illness to wellness. Funding and service provision should be applied where it will make the most difference. If nothing changes nothing changes. Thank you for another 3 years on LDHB.

Having worked at Taupo Hospital for the last ten years in Physiotherapy I have had the privilege of assisting the community in betterment of their physical health. Lakes District has multifaceted needs which demands varied skills and experiences from Board representatives.
I will strive to bring a grass roots perspective to the Board and be a vocal proponent for all people within Lakes, particularly your communities in Turangi, Mangakino and Taupo. There is some excellent progress being made assisting the most vulnerable within our community, however demands on our health system are increasing. I would like to see increased technology integration as we strive to meet the health needs and expectations of our community. Future
planning must think outside the box utilising our creativity to connect and grow together.
